About
On May 15, 1994, Sunday afternoon, the widespread joy of the resurrection was met with joy and satisfaction for the inauguration of the Civic Home for the Elderly in Chrysoupoli. From the time (1977) when the idea of establishing the holy home for the elderly in Chrysoupoli of Nestos was conceived until the day of the inauguration, a long time had passed, the effort was arduous, and the adversities varied. The pastoral care for the elderly, with the application of the teaching and the acceptance of the practice of the Church, of the rich tradition of social welfare and support for our brothers and sisters in need through works of love and charity, led to the establishment of this ecclesiastical institution.

Its purpose is, on the one hand, the construction of a modern, suitable building on a plot of land in the Parish of Agios Dimitrios Chrysoupolis, where the church of the Prophet Elias also stands, for the first donation made by Athanasios Politis during his lifetime, and on the other hand, the protection of the needy and neglected elderly by the local Church, for the provision of housing, food, medical care and any other care to them. The path to completing the project was not easy. It often happens that good intentions are opposed and charitable works are fought over. However, when the motives are pure and selfless, when the effort is based on faith and hope and, what is equally important, when it finds a response from the Church staff, then it works wonders. The Nursing Home began operating from the day of its inauguration. It opened its gates hospitably and welcomed our first elderly brothers, creating another family, another community of love, which in full growth numbered around a hundred members.
With the care and attention of the Reverend Vicars and all those who serve the ecclesiastical welfare, the solitary elders, men and women, found and continue to find hospitable shelter, warmth and love in a civilized and philanthropic environment, with the kind staff serving them.
Subsequently, as many of the residents quickly end up bedridden and in need of constant medical care, they led those responsible to create the Chronically Ill Department with 34 beds. In addition to the beds of the Nursing Home, other chronically ill patients are also admitted since there is the appropriate and modern infrastructure in terms of spaces and equipment, and above all, in terms of appropriate and increased medical and nursing staff. The purchase of the area around the Nursing Home and the donation during her lifetime to the Metropolis of two properties in Thassos by the elderly doctor Kyriaki Laganakos are related to the better organization, operation and financial support of the Foundation. This was done as a sign of special respect and love for the Eastern Orthodox Church of Christ, but also out of a special moral duty and for reasons of decency and for charitable purposes, as she wrote in the donation.
With the blessing of God and with these data, with the continuous offering and support of named and anonymous donors and benefactors, the ecclesiastical Home for the Elderly of Chrysoupolis exists and operates, offering its philanthropic social services to the needy of our local and wider region. Below we present photographically the generous and public benefit institution, a splendid ornament of our Metropolis.
